This pamphlet assists Scouts attempting to earn the Stamp Collecting Merit Badge. Stamp collecting is the worlds most popular hobby, enjoyed by millions throughout the world. Postage stamps are like tiny windows that introduce the people of the world to a countrys leaders, customs, history, products, and environment. Through this hobby, you can experience history!

By fulfilling the requirements of this badge, Scouts will learn to describe and/or demonstrate some of the following:
• Achieve a better understanding of people, places, institutions, history, and geography
• Describe the history, growth, and development of the United States postal system and how it is different from postal systems in other countries
• Define topical stamp collecting and describe types of stamp collections
• Differentiate between types of stamps, numbers on plate block, booklet or coil, marginal markings, overprint and surcharge, types of mail, cancellation and postmark, first day cover, postal stationery
• Explain why catalog value can vary from the corresponding purchase price • Explain stamp condition?, illustrating the different factors that affect a stamps value
• Demonstrate the use of various stamp collectors tools
• Show a stamp album and how to mount stamps
• Discuss various ways to help preserve stamps, covers, and albums in first-class condition
• Design a stamp, cancellation, or cachet
• Visit a post office, stamp club, or stamp show with an experienced collector
• Research and report on a famous stamp-related personality or the history behind a particular stamp
• Describe the steps taken to produce a stamp
• Prepare a display involving stamps to tell a story about the stamps and how they relate to history, geography, or a favorite topic
• Mount and show various collections of stamps
